Art and Design

Subject Leader: Emily Bone-Knell

At Charing Church of England Primary School, Art and Design holds a vital place in nurturing creativity, curiosity, and resilience in our children, reflecting our vision of a creative learning community where all talents are celebrated and developed. Rooted in our Christian ethos and values of compassion, friendship, forgiveness, resilience, and hope, our Art and Design curriculum provides children with rich opportunities to express themselves visually and tactilely, fostering a deep understanding of the world and their unique place within it. Through this subject, we aim to inspire lifelong learners who are confident in their creativity and respectful of diverse perspectives and cultures.

Key Aims

Our Art and Design curriculum aims to develop children’s ability to communicate their ideas, feelings, and observations through a variety of media and techniques. We seek to build children’s skills in critical thinking and reflection, encouraging them to evaluate their own and others’ work with kindness and constructive insight. By exploring the work of artists and designers from different times and cultures, children gain a broader cultural awareness and appreciation that enriches their understanding of the world. We are committed to embedding subject-specific vocabulary to support long-term memory and deepen understanding, in line with whole-school priorities.
