Music

Subject Leader: Hannah Horsford

At Charing Church of England Primary School, music is a vital part of our inclusive and creative learning community, reflecting our commitment to nurturing curiosity, resilience, and compassion in every child. Rooted in our Christian ethos and values, our music curriculum inspires pupils to express themselves confidently and creatively, fostering a lifelong passion for music. We believe that through engaging with diverse musical traditions and genres, children develop not only technical expertise but also a deep appreciation of cultural richness and historical context, preparing them to be open, compassionate global citizens who stand up for what is right.

Key Aims
Our music curriculum aims to develop pupils’ aural perception, technical skills, and musical understanding through a carefully sequenced progression of learning that builds foundational knowledge before advancing to more complex concepts. We strive to cultivate a rapidly widening repertoire of musical styles that pupils use to create original and imaginative compositions and performances. We explicitly teach musical vocabulary and concepts to embed subject-specific language, supporting our whole-school priority of strengthening vocabulary and long-term memory. Through collaborative and individual music-making, we encourage resilience, teamwork, and self-expression, ensuring all pupils, including those with additional needs or barriers to learning, can access and enjoy music.
