Religious Education (RE)

Subject Leader: Hannah Carrington

At Charing Church of England Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is a vital part of our inclusive curriculum that reflects and reinforces our school vision and values. Rooted in our Christian ethos and inspired by Jesus, RE provides a safe and respectful space for children to explore diverse religious beliefs and worldviews. We aim to nurture curious, passionate, and resilient lifelong learners who can engage thoughtfully with questions of faith, morality, and human experience, helping them to become open, compassionate global citizens who stand up for what is right.

The key aims of our RE curriculum are to develop children’s religious literacy, enabling them to hold balanced and informed conversations about Christianity and other principal worldviews. We seek to foster an understanding of how beliefs shape people’s lives, behaviours, and communities. Our teaching encourages pupils to reflect on their own beliefs and values in light of their learning, thereby supporting their personal, spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. We are committed to delivering high-quality, accessible lessons that meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND, EAL, and disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring equity and inclusion throughout their RE journey.

Children will gain core knowledge of Christianity, other world religions and worldviews exploring key concepts, stories, practises, and celebrations. They will develop critical skills such as respectful dialogue, empathy, reflection, and ethical reasoning. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build foundational understanding in Key Stage 1 and deepen complexity and critical thinking in Key Stage 2. Vocabulary development is embedded throughout to support language acquisition and long-term memory, addressing our school improvement priorities. We also integrate opportunities for children to express their own ideas and experiences confidently, contributing to a rich classroom community of shared learning.
