French

Living and Learning with Faith, Friendship and Fun

Subject leader: Abigail Young

Learning French at primary school opens doors to new cultures and helps children see themselves as part of a wider world. A high-quality language education fosters pupils’ curiosity, broadens their appreciation of others, and deepens their understanding of global communities. At Charing, we believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of preparing children to be thoughtful members of a multicultural society. Our teaching enables pupils to express their ideas in another language, understand and respond to its speakers, and communicate confidently for practical purposes, both orally and in writing.

We use the Kapow scheme, which motivates children from the very first lesson and offers clear, achievable objectives that cater for different learning styles. From Year 3 to Year 6, pupils progressively acquire vocabulary, grammar, and phonics skills through a range of relevant and engaging topics. French is taught weekly in a 30-minute whole-class session, giving pupils regular opportunities to build their knowledge, develop their confidence, and enjoy learning a new language.
