Subject Leader: Abi Young

At Charing Church of England Primary School, learning French is an integral part of nurturing compassionate, resilient, and curious lifelong learners who are inspired to understand and celebrate the rich diversity of the world. Reflecting our Christian values of friendship, forgiveness, and hope, our languages curriculum opens doors to new cultures and perspectives, helping children see themselves as thoughtful members of a global community. Through language learning, pupils develop respect and empathy for others, strengthening our inclusive school ethos where every child is valued and supported to flourish.

Our key aims in teaching French are to foster pupils’ curiosity and confidence in communicating in a new language, enabling them to express ideas clearly, listen attentively, and respond appropriately in both spoken and written forms. We aim to build a secure foundation of vocabulary, grammar, and phonics skills that support practical communication and deepen understanding of French-speaking cultures. This aligns with our whole-school priorities to embed subject-specific vocabulary and enhance long-term memory, ensuring that children retain and apply their learning confidently.
