Squirrels
Welcome to Squirrels
We are so excited for our learning journey in Year 1. The Year 1 curriculum and timetable has been carefully planned to be a natural progression from your child's year in Reception. To ensure a seamless transition, we have planned our learning to align with the Characteristics of Effective Learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage. In Year 1, the class teacher is Mrs Carrington with Miss Broadway as our class Teaching Assistant and Ms Axon as our 1:1 Teaching Assistant.
Key Information
PE Days & Forest School
We have PE on a Monday and a Wednesday, alongside Forest School on Mondays too. We kindly ask that each child has a pair of named wellies kept in school for their time at Forest School and during Opal Play during break times. On Mondays and Wednesdays, please ensure your child comes dressed in their P.E. school kit. As young children can sometimes misplace items, we strongly recommend that you label all jumpers with your child’s name, so we can return them to the rightful owner.
Reading
Reading is a key focus for us this year, and we enthusiastically encourage parents to read with their children as often as possible. We expect each child to read a minimum of three times per week and for parents/carers to log their reading progress on their online reading journal via the Learning with Parents app.
We will continue our learning of phonics through our programme called Read Write Inc (RWI). We have sessions from Monday to Thursday, during which children will read a corresponding RWI book. The book from these sessions, along with additional books from our library, will be brought home for the children to enjoy and read to you. These books will be changed every Thursday but your child's books need to come to school every day as we will do daily reading with the children.
As the year progresses, pupils will begin experiencing more subject-specific learning. We are confident they will rise to this challenge and thoroughly enjoy their educational journey.
We look forward to a wonderful year ahead in Squirrels Class!
