Art and DT

Living and Learning with Faith, Friendship and Fun

Subject leader: Emily Bone-Knell

Art & Design

At Charing we aim to teach Art and Design in a fun and creative way. Our aspiration is to ensure that children are engaged, inspired and challenged throughout each unit of learning. We believe that art stimulates creativity, imagination and inventiveness. We believe that art gives our pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences. It fires their imagination.

Art should enable the children to communicate what they see, feel and think. Children should experiment with their ideas, their use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes therefore enabling them to continue to develop and secure their skill base and become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. Students will be encouraged to use their skills to create their own independent works of art, craft and design. In order to achieve their best potential, students will have access to a range of good quality resources that will support each topic and enable a confident approach.

Design & Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Charing we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

At Charing we aim to provide the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding by exploring various artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms and their impact on culture and history.
